Ethanol Blend Fuels Spark Controversy Over E10’s Potential Return

The ethanol-in-petrol row: Could E10 make comeback alongside E20?

There has been opposition to the E20 fuel from various quarters, with claims ranging from notable reduction in mileage and engine component wear in older vehicles whose engines were not designed for higher ethanol blends.

This concern is not new. In recent years, there has been a growing debate about the suitability of E20 as a replacement for traditional petrol. While some argue that it is an environmentally friendly alternative, others claim that it poses significant challenges to vehicle manufacturers and owners alike.

  • Engine component wear: The higher ethanol content in E20 can lead to increased wear on engine components, particularly those made from materials such as piston rings and cylinder liners.
  • Notable reduction in mileage: Vehicles equipped with engines designed for lower ethanol blends may experience a significant reduction in mileage due to the corrosive effects of ethanol on fuel systems and engine components.

Moreover, there are concerns about the impact of E20 on older vehicles, particularly those manufactured before 2011. These vehicles were not designed to handle higher ethanol blends and may experience issues with fuel systems, ignition systems, and other components.

In contrast, E10 has been around for longer and is widely used in many parts of the world. It offers a similar environmental benefit to E20 while posing fewer risks to vehicle manufacturers and owners.

A potential compromise: E10-E20 blends

Some experts suggest that a blend of E10 and E20 could offer a middle ground between the two fuels. This would allow vehicles to take advantage of the environmental benefits of ethanol without exposing them to the potential risks associated with higher ethanol blends.

A study by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) found that blending E10 and E20 can help reduce emissions from diesel engines while minimizing the negative impact on petrol engines.

However, more research is needed to fully understand the benefits and drawbacks of such blends. In the meantime, manufacturers are exploring ways to modify their vehicles to accommodate higher ethanol blends.

The UK government has announced plans to introduce a new fuel standard for cars sold after 2030, which will require them to be compatible with E10. This move is seen as a significant step towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the transportation sector.
